When Massachusetts House Speaker Robert DeLeo filed an official notice last Friday that he has entered job negotiations with Northeastern University, his alma mater, his action seemed to most to set the stage for the election of Majority Leader Ron Mariano of Quincy to the speaker’s chair that DeLeo has held for 12 of his 30 years in the chamber, a record-long tenure for any House leader in state history.
To most, maybe, but not to Rep. Russell Holmes of Mattapan, who said that if DeLeo steps down in the next few weeks as expected, he intends to challenge Mariano. The past leader of the Black and Latino Legislative Caucus said he made his decision last Thursday night after speaking with House Speaker Pro Tempore Patricia Haddad, who told him she did not intend to run. ....

Berkshire County state representatives are reacting to signs that long-serving Massachusetts House Speaker Robert DeLeo is preparing to step down after over a decade.
DeLeo, 70, represents the 19th Suffolk District, and became speaker in 2009. Mid-December news that he is in talks for a job at Northeastern University – his alma mater – made shockwaves in the state.
“Well, it was a surprise, people have been saying these rumors really since my first year in office back in 2011. So to hear it actually has a lot of validity and is, I think now likely to happen was surprising to me, especially where we re in a unique session, said 2nd Berkshire District State Representative Paul Mark, a fellow Democrat. “We’re in a session that has had formal sessions all the way through, probably right to the last minute on January 5th, and a new session is going to begin on January 6th. Mass. Speaker DeLeo Discloses Plans to Negotiate With Northeastern, Indicating He Is Stepping Down

The Democrat from Winthrop has been speaker for 12 years after being elected to the House of Representatives in 1990. DeLeo went to college at Northeastern before getting his law degree at Suffolk University Law School.
DeLeo said he asked his personal legal counsel to contact the Massachusetts State Ethics Commission to ensure compliance with laws designed to protect against conflict of interests.
In a statement, DeLeo said the disclosure was not currently required but said he chose to make it out of an abundance of caution.
Gov. Charlie Baker said he spoke with DeLeo Friday when the speaker called to let him know he was filing the ethics report. Baker didn t ask DeLeo to stay on, the governor said. ....
