We're Already Hyping 6G When 5G Hasn't Even Finished Disappointing Us Yet

It was the technology that was supposed to change the world. According to carriers, not only was fifth-generation wireless (5G) supposed to bring about the fourth industrial revolution, it was supposed to revolutionize everything from smart cities to cancer treatment. According to conspiracy theorists and internet imbeciles, 5G is responsible for everything from COVID-19 to your migraines.
Unfortunately for both sets of folks, data continues to indicate that 5G is nowhere near that interesting.
A number of recent studies have already shown that U.S. 5G is notably slower than most overseas deployments (thanks in part to government s failure to make more mid-band spectrum available for public use). Several other studies have shown that initial deployments in many cases are actually slower than existing 4G networks. That s before you get to the fact that U.S. consumers already pay more for wireless than a long list of developed ....

Verizon's CTO: 'I don't know what the hell 6G is'

Verizon s top networking executive, Kyle Malady, offers a blunt assessment of the expected next generation of wireless networking technology: There s going to be a collection of new technology advancements, and then people will rally around the ones that are meaningful, he said. We ll see how those things pan out.
However, Malady said that, so far, there s no clear reason to move beyond 5G. I really don t know what the hell 6G is, he said. We just put 5G in. And I think there s a lot of development still to come on that one.
Malady s comments certainly align with his job at Verizon, which is to manage the operator s wired and wireless operations and to construct a 5G network. But they also serve to put a decidedly pragmatic spin on the growing noise around 6G technology. ....

AT&T opens up about open RAN | Light Reading

Some of AT&T s top networking executives have begun talking up the benefits of open RAN.
We believe that open RAN is going to be a good benefit for us, and we actually plan to implement it in our network, Scott Mair, AT&T s president of technology and operations and one of the operator s top 5G executives, said this week at the Barclay Global Technology, Media and Telecommunications Conference. We think it s really a good technology that will become available. But it s not going to happen overnight. It s going to take some time.
Mair added that AT&T started work on open RAN technology in 2018 with a handful of other vendors. Now, he said, there are hundreds of companies working on the technology all over the world. ....
