SANTA FE – An Ohkay Owingeh man was charged and arrested for unlawful branding, a fourth degree felony, after results from a DNA test proved a calf with his brand was the offspring of another man’s cow.
Gilbert P. Borrego, 63, was arrested on Tuesday, days after a special investigator with the New Mexico Livestock Board got DNA results back from a University of California, Davis laboratory.
According to the arrest warrant, rancher Pete Garcia of Tierra Amarilla contacted the Livestock Board after he noticed a calf with what appeared to be a fresh brand that indicated it belonged to Borrego. The calf also had an orange ear tag, the same color used by Borrego.
