Dane County rescue teams respond to Lake Mendota marina for report of boat taking on water June 9, 2021 3:44 PM Logan Rude WAUNAKEE, Wis. Multiple rescue crews are responding to the Mazanet Marina on the north side of Lake Mendota after a group of boaters reported their boat was taking on water. Dane County Dispatch said they got a call around 3:20 p.m. for a boat in distress, about a quarter mile from the marina. Dispatch said no injuries have been reported. It’s unclear exactly how many people were on the boat. The Dane County Sheriff’s Office, Madison Fire Department Lake Rescue Team, Maple Bluff Fire Department and Waunakee first responders are responding to the scene.

Fire officials said the dog’s owner fell through the ice while trying to rescue the dog, but she was able to get back onto the ice before the Lake Rescue team arrived. The dog and woman fell through the ice near the area where the Yahara River and Lake Monona meet. By the time rescue crews arrived, the woman was able to get back onto the ice, but the dog was still stranded. The first crew at the scene tried saving the dog with standard ice rescue equipment, but their efforts were delayed due to the fragility of the ice.
