The new episodes of Chicago Med, Chicago Fire, and Chicago P.D. that will air this week on NBC were all directed by women.
It’s a big night for the One Chicago shows, as it will showcase three talented female directors – SJ Main Muñoz (Chicago Med), Brenna Malloy (Chicago Fire), and Bethany Rooney (Chicago P.D.).

Northwestern Qatar has announced the 2021 Media and Research Awards, recognizing nearly 100 projects representing NU-Q students’ scholarly and journalistic excellence over the past two years.
This year’s finalists, which include submissions from the academic years 2019-20 and 2020-21, featured journalistic, multimedia, and research projects tackling pressing global issues, ranging from a film on a Yemeni refugee who found love in South Korea to news articles on racism in the Arab World and social distancing, to research projects on digital diplomacy, education in Palestine, and the politics of climate change. ....

Netflix Developing Animated Musical About Cinderella's Stepsisters

Coming off from last month’s debut of
Moxie, Golden Globe winner Amy Poehler has found her next project with Netflix in the form of the animated musical
Steps, a reimagining of the classic Cinderella story centered around her two stepsisters with Student Academy Award winner Alyce Tzue set to make her directorial debut on the film.
“We are so excited to be working with Netflix and the great Riki, Kate and Alyce on this joyful and much-needed story,” Poehler said in a statement.
Steps is expected to tell a fresh new spin on the Cinderella story with two young Asian leads, following the two stepsisters who, after getting overlooked for marriage by the prince, embark on an epic journey that will help them realize that their own perfect fairytales might be different from what they originally thought. ....

The New Faces of Czech Animation

The films Alois Nebel (2011) and Dcera (The Daughter, 2019) are two of the most successful Czech animated films of the last decade. Both were made using innovative animation techniques, and their plots centre around characters that have to deal with difficult pasts. Dcera is a short film directed by Daria Kascheeva, a student at Prague’s film school. It touches on the universal theme of a troubled family relationship. Alois Nebel, on the other hand, is a feature film that deals with the more specific topic of Czech post-war history.
Alois Nebel is director Tomáš Luňák’s debut. It is based on a comic-book trilogy by author Jaroslav Rudiš and illustrator Jaromír Švejdík, or Jaromír 99. The main character is the eponymous Alois Nebel, a middle-aged train dispatcher who lives in the forgotten mountain village of Bílý Potok. The story takes place during the turbulent time of the Velvet Revolution when Nebel becomes haunted by demons from his past. The train dispatche ....
