The Breeze's fight for COVID-19 data transparency: A year in review | News


Aug. 21, 2020, JMU began its fall semester freshman move in. Just over a week later, on Sept. 1, the university officially passed the 500-case mark for COVID-19 cases in its student, faculty and staff body. In the following two weeks, JMU reached a 60% positivity rate in its testing regime — one out of every six COVID-19 tests was coming back positive.

Several days before that 500-case mark, Aug. 26, JMU issued a partial denial in response to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request by The Breeze asking for the following data, all by day:

Reporter Keagan Hughes interviewed, Alexandra Benc, Chapter President of Alpha Phi, Shelby Baker, a sophomore sister in Zeta Tau Alpha, Bridgette Shallow, a junior in Alpha Delta Pi, and Charles Weismann, a Brother in Sigma Nu.
Alexandra Benc went into detail about how although the chapter bonding between sisters was lost because they could not physically meet in person, they still found other ways to make sure that the PNMS, potential new members, would still get that intimate and close bonds with the sisters. ....

SGA proposes a student legal service at JMU


Student Legal Services (SLS), which would provide free or reduced-price legal consultation to students and would educate the student body of its rights on and off campus, is SGA’s latest initiative at JMU. 
Student Body President Dela Adedze first proposed this initiative to Vice President for Student Affairs Tim Miller in March 2020, and in September 2020 the SGA resolution was introduced. He has the approval of President Jonathan Alger, who Adedza said told him he loves the idea, as well as Board of Visitors member Christopher Falcon.
“We definitely had a lot of administrative support as well as introduced it to faculty members who like the idea,” Adedze said. “It’s just been moving a little bit slowly.” ....

JMU chosen by VDH to host vaccination events


On Jan. 10, senior nursing major Brittany Mills became one of the first JMU students to brave the COVID-19 vaccine.
Mills worked in a pediatric doctor’s office over winter break. She planned to receive the shot when she returned to school but was “thrilled” to learn that she could get the first dose of the Moderna vaccine through her employment at the office.
Soon after, Mills was in line for inoculation at her local hospital in Maryland.
“I was just excited for new hope,” Mills said. “I felt proud of health care workers and happy to be a part of making progress through this pandemic.” ....
