On Friday, April 9th, a Las Vegas jury awarded $29.5 million to the family of Chantel Giacalone, a former model and actress who suffered brain damage after going into anaphylaxis at work. Giacalone s family, who now cares for her, sued the ambulance company on-site, citing negligence.
In 2013, Giacalone, then 27, was modeling at Mandalay Bay South Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, when she ate a pretzel a friend gave her. The pretzel contained peanut butter, and Giacalone went into anaphylactic shock. However, the medics on duty at the event, MedicWest Ambulance, didn t have intravenous epinephrine on hand, which is needed if a patient s body has already gone into shock. The family of model and aspiring actress Chantel Giacalone received $29.5 million after a three-week civil trial against MedicWest ended on Friday in Las Vegas. The lawsuit came about after Giacolone had a severe allergic reaction to a pretzel in 2013.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that a MedicWest Ambulance, which was running a medic station on the day in question, failed to properly treat Giacalone after she ate a peanut butter-filled pretzel while in Las Vegas, at the Mandalay Bay South Convention Center.
Giacalone is allergic to peanuts and didn’t realize that the pretzel had peanut butter until she took a bite into it. She subsequently went into anaphylactic shock. She lost oxygen to her brain for several minutes while being treated by the MedicWest Ambulance. ....

LAS VEGAS - The family of an aspiring actress and model who was left brain-damaged after suffering a serious allergic reaction to a pretzel infused with peanut butter was awarded nearly $30 million by a Las Vegas jury.
On Feb. 20, 2013, then-27-year-old Chantel Giacalone went into anaphylactic shock after biting into the peanut butter pretzel while modeling clothes at a fashion trade show at the Mandalay Bay South Convention Center, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.
The paper reported that Giacalone’s friend brought her a frozen yogurt and put the bite-sized pretzel on top. Giacalone, unaware it contained peanut butter, went into anaphylactic shock after taking a bite. ....
