The Election Commission on Thursday announced that it was setting up a core committee to “identify learning experiences and shortcomings” from the recently concluded Assembly polls.
The committee, headed by the EC Secretary General and comprising other senior officers, was tasked with identifying “shortcomings/gaps in ECI regulatory regime, if any and the gaps in implementation and enforcement at the level of CEOs/district officials”, an EC statement said. ....

Elections bring the Election Commission of India (ECI) into sharp focus as this constitutional body superintends, directs and controls the conduct of elections. It is the constitutional duty of the ECI to ensure that the elections held are free and fair.

New Delhi: The Election Commission has let off BJP candidate from West Bengal’s Nandigram Suvendu Adhikari with a light rap for his “mini-Pakistan” remark made at a public meeting last month.
Bengal is in the middle of eight-phase elections, which have seen campaigns unparalleled in attempts at communal polarisation.
In an order issued on Monday night, the poll panel warned Adhikari and said it “advises him to desist from using such statement while making public utterances during the period when Model Code of Conduct is in force”. ....
