North Goa admin issues notice over crowd surge at CM Pramod Sawant event

India records biggest single-day spike with 379,257 fresh Covid-19 cases

India saw a record single day rise of 3,79,257 new coronavirus infections pushing the total tally of COVID-19 cases to 1,83,76,524, while active cases crossed the 30-lakh mark, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Thursday.
The death toll increased to 2,04,832 with a record 3,645 daily new fatalities, the data updated at 8 am showed.
Registering a steady increase, the active cases have increased to 30,84,814 comprising 16.79 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate has further dropped to 82.10 per cent.
The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 1,50, 86,878.
The case fatality rate has further dropped to 1.11 per cent, the data stated. ....

Former Maharashtra minister, Congress leader Eknath Gaikwad dies of Covid

He was 81.
The former MP, who was the father of Maharashtra School Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad, succumbed to the viral infection at a city hospital around 10 am, the sources added.
Eknath Gaikwad had also served as the president of the Mumbai Congress.
Describing Gaikwad as a father-like figure and mentor , Maharashtra Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant said the death was quite saddening .

JSPL gains on divestment of majority stake in Jindal Power

Jindal Steel & Power (JSPL) rose 1.49% to Rs 448.90 after the company accepted a binding offer from Worldone, to divest its 96.42% stake in Jindal Power (JPL), a material subsidiary of the company.
The divestment is in line with JSPL s strategic objective to continuously reduce its debt, focus on its India Steel business and significantly reduce its carbon footprint by almost half as part of its ESG objectives. The equity value is an all-cash offer of Rs 3,015 crore for 96.42% stake in JPL, including 3,400 MW (mega-watt) coal fired power plants in Chhattisgarh and other non-core assets owned by JPL.
V.R. Sharma, the managing director of JSPL, said: This divestment is in line with our ESG objectives to be amongst the top 10 lowest Co2 emitting steel companies of the world. Telangana records 6,551 new Covid-19 cases, 43 deaths in a single day

COVID-19 tally in Telangana
breached four lakh mark with 6,551 fresh infections and the toll crossed 2,000 with 43 more casualties.
Thetotal number of cases now stands at over 4.01 lakh while the toll rose to 2,042.
Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) accounted for the most number of cases with 1418, followed by Medchal Malkajgiri (554) and Rangareddy (482), a government bulletin said on Monday providing details as of 8 PM on April 25.
The total number of cumulative cases in the state stood at 4,01,783 while with 3804 patients being cured, the total recoveries were at 3,34,144.
The state has 65,597 active cases and over 73 thousand samples were tested on Sunday.
Cumulatively, over 1.25 crore samples have been tested. ....
