Sarasota and Manatee counties haven t seen much rain this month. And starting last Tuesday, conditions seemed to change overnight in Sarasota. Record demand for water led some residents to use drinking water to keep their lawns green. This caused water outages and low pressure problems for anyone living north of Bee Ridge Road. The next day, the county declared a drought emergency and urged residents to conserve water for the next week. The persistent dry weather and an increased chance of wildfires also led authorities to impose recreational burn bans across the region. But the dry conditions didn t surprise forecaster Rodney Winn of the National Weather Service, who said that the area’s below average rainfall this year is uncommon but not extraordinary. Manatee County s treatment facility is only able to produce about 65% of the permitted capacity. As a result, utility officials have asked Sarasota County to reduce the amount of water it is taking, so Manatee County may continue to service internal customers. The challenges in the potable water system have grown considerably in recent days, with several residents reporting little to no water. As of Thursday, the Florida League of Cities’ website shows the town is among 37 municipalities that have written the governor in opposition to House Bill 403. Bradenton Beach mayor John Chappie also wrote in opposition to the bill that would prohibit local governments from taking certain actions relating to the licensure and regulation of home-based businesses. “We felt it [was] important to take a stance on this, I would say more in solidarity with other municipalities that may be dramatically affected by it than as a result of feared impacts on Longboat Key itself,” Schneier said. ....

Quote icon Just a few weeks after the first COVID-19 case was discovered in Florida – early in March, 2020 – the state began to realize that reliable access to the digital world has become a necessity. Education, health care, employment, social services and many other aspects of our lives moved online – all things we suddenly needed more than ever. But in order to have effective digital access, people need three equally important tools: a reliable broadband connection, the right technology and digital literacy. ....
