Clearwater approves 2 new grants in bid to address blight, vacancies

CLEARWATER â City leaders concerned about blight and vacant properties in downtown and the rest of the community redevelopment district have had several discussions about whether to take the carrot or stick approach.
On March 15, they decided to give carrots a shot, approving a pair of programs that, starting May 1, will offer commercial businesses as much as $50,000 to improve their properties.
The first program aims to improve the visual appearance of properties through small-scale exterior building and site improvements.
âThe objectives of the program are, in short, to make buildings look better in the CRA (Community Redevelopment Agency) commercial ground floor buildings,â CRA director Amanda Thompson said. ....

Montana Gov. Gianforte Signs Bill Banning Sanctuary Cities: Immigration Laws Will Be Enforced
Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte (R) signed a bill on Wednesday banning sanctuary cities, which effectively act as safe havens for illegal immigrants, across the state, promising immigration laws will be enforced in Montana.
Per the law, local enforcement agencies will be required to abide by federal immigration law or face penalties for noncompliance. The law grants the attorney general authority to bring a civil action to compel compliance by a state agency or local government. Violators may have grants withheld and could face fines of $10,000 every five days that the state agency or local government is not in compliance with the provisions, per the measure. ....

SHC grants permission to Nisar Khuhro to travel abroad

The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Thursday granted one-time permission to Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, a Pakistan Peoples Party leader and the adviser to the Sindh chief minister on works and services, to travel abroad for 38 days.
Khuhro, who in his long political career has served as the opposition leader in the Sindh Assembly, Sindh Assembly speaker and the provincial food minster, had approached the SHC against placement of his name on the Exit Control List (ECL) due to pending National Accountability Bureau’s corruption inquiries and investigations.
The petitioner’s counsel, Farooq H Naek, submitted that the wife of the Khuhro, who had been living in the United States with children, was seriously ill and the petitioner needed to travel to attend to his wife and kids. ....

New Delhi, Apr. April 2 (IANS) The Finance Ministry has released an amount of Rs 4,608 crore to the states for providing grant-in-aid to the local bodies. The grants are both for the Rural Local Bodies (RLBs) and Urban Local Bodies (ULBs).
