Concerns have been raised after the East Midlands was overlooked in the latest announcement of Nightingale Courts, which aim to reduce delays in the justice system.
Nottinghamshire s deputy police and crime commissioner Emma Foody joined other regional commissioners to voice disappointment at the decision.
Government ministers yesterday (Friday) announced 14 new venues to help reduce delays in the court system and deliver speedier justice for victims amid covid-19.

However, the East Midlands was not included in the list.
Emma Foody said: âThe East Midlands is in the same position as other areas, with a court system buckling under the pressure of a backlog that originated long before the pandemic. ....

Chichester Crown Court to reopen amid plans to clear backlog

Chichester Crown Court was closed in December 2018 and has effectively been mothballed since then.
Court hearings were kept in the city, with the district council stepping in to provide room for family law cases.
The closure sparked protests and a campaign to save the court building in Southgate in the city centre.
It was led by lawyer Edward Cooke and the city’s MP Gillian Keegan, but criminal cases in West Sussex had been moved to Portsmouth Crown Court instead.
Now, the government has announced two court rooms at the site will be used to hear crown court matters.
It is part of a £113 million scheme to cut the huge backlog of cases which had built up even before the coronavirus pandemic hit. ....

14 new Nightingale Courts set to clear backlog of 50,000 cases

The first “super courtroom” to hear gang trials is among 14 new Nightingale Courts announced by the Government to clear a backlog of more than 50,000 cases.
The additional temporary courtrooms, set up in hotels, theatres and conference centres, will help reduce delays and deliver justice for victims, the Government said.
The Manchester Hilton hotel and event spaces in London and Birmingham are among the latest 14 venues to be confirmed dealing with mostly non-custodial Crown Court cases.
And the “super courtroom” will be created at Manchester Crown Court, Crown Square, to deal with so-called “multi-hander” cases, which typically require more space as they involve multiple defendants being tried together, such as gang murder trials. ....
