MMIWG screening shines light on those impacted by crisis

A documentary from an Indigenous journalist and advocate is the next event lined up to raise awareness around Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG).
On Wednesday, May 12 the “Treaty #3 MMIWG Awareness Month Events” Facebook group will be holding a virtual screening of the documentary “1200+,” co-produced by Sheila North, an Indigenous advocate and journalist with both the CBC and CTV News, as well as the former Grand Chief of Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak (MKO).
The documentary focuses on the continuing MMIWG crisis in Canada, though it is set primarily in Winnipeg, Manitoba following the death and discovery of Tina Fontaine in 2014. The screening of the documentary on May 12 will be followed by a question and answer session with North. ....

Maintained McIntosh Indian Residential School Memorial Site Now A Reality

Lillian Berg School’s Canadian Heritage Grant, in partnership with the Municipality of Machin, is being put to good use to maintain the McIntosh Indian Residential School Memorial Site.
Grade 7/8 Teacher Shannon Elliot talked about their grant approval and her class’ continued efforts towards reconciliation with the Rotary Club of Dryden during their virtual meeting Wednesday.
Elliot explains it was after her class first visited the site in the fall of 2019 when they decided to take action and apply for the 6 thousand dollar grant.
“We noticed some litter and larger items that had been dumped in the bush and we also noticed how much the grass had grown up around the monument. Many students were saddened by the overgrown grass around the monument, benches and tables. Their words were, they thought the site deserved more care and respect.” ....

FIREFLY in Kenora/Rainy River is issued an apology for what it calls âracially insensitive and offensive commentsâ made on social media by one of its employees.
The organization that helps children, youth and families, says it is heartbroken. It describes the employee’s comments as an act of racism that don’t reflect the values or the work of the agency.
The FIREFLY logo was used in the person’s profile.
It has offices across the area, including at Fort Frances and Atikokan.
