Slagh says contract situation shows need to increase government transparency

LANSING Michigan Rep. Bradley Slagh believes state agencies could take additional steps to improve transparency, following the awarding of a contract for health services in the state s correction system.
Crain s Detroit Business Journal reported the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget (DTMB) awarded a $590 million contract to Grand Prairie Health Services for health care services for prisoners in the Michigan Department of Corrections system.
Grand Prairie, which is based in Texas, will replace Tennessee-based Corizon Health, who previously held the contract.
But some members of the Michigan Legislature took issue with the way the contract s awarding unfolded. DTMB notified other bidders that Grand Prairie s bid had been selected Friday, Feb. 26. Other bidders had five calendar days to match the bid which went unrivaled by the Wednesday deadline. ....
