Musical theater summer youth camps set for Des Moines CIvic Center

Des Moines Performing Arts still isn t ready to resume in-person performances, but it is preparing to provide another kind of direct experience: camps for young actors.
DMPA will offer three summer opportunities for various age groups, based on students grade level in fall 2021. For grades three through eight, there s a Let s Put on a Show musical theater camp; a Broadway Academy for grades six through eight; and a Broadway summer intensive program for grades nine through 12 and college freshmen.
The camps, previously held at the Temple Theater, will move to the more spacious Civic Center downtown, with COVID-19 safety precautions in place. ....

This month marks the one-year anniversary of when stages across central Iowa went dark. As local producers mourn the loss, they remain resolved to adapt and find ways to overcome the situation. A key ingredient has been the support from patrons and the government. Each of these sources is a testament to the vital contributions that performing arts add to a healthy and thriving community. Another has been the collective coping with the situation. Each company not only has gone through rigorous internal evaluations and ârolling plansâ in response to the fluid challenge, but they are also maintaining ties with their kindred spirits: fellow companies in the community. Des Moines Performing Arts Announces: Dixie's Happy Hour

Des Moines Performing Arts (DMPA) announced a new virtual performance from one of the Prairie Meadowâs Temple Comedy Series favorite performers, Dixie Longate. Known for her one-woman shows, including the international smash hit Dixieâs Tupperware Party and the inspiring Dixieâs: Never Wear a Tube Top While Riding a Mechanical Bull (and 16 other things I learned while I was drinking last Thursday), Dixie has returned with Dixieâs Happy Hour a new show for these unpredictable times.
Spend 90 minutes enjoying a cocktail with Dixie as she mixes drinks and shares stories that prove happiness is not only found at the bottom of a margarita glass. This uplifting story challenges audiences to search for their personal happy hours by looking for the good in even the most complicated situations. ....

New varieties of performance arts arise from the pandemic

One truth always seems to emerge from cultural chaos: creativity will find a way to adapt, overcome and continue to engage the public. Central Iowa is showing its mettle during these challenging times, and some wonderful offerings are arising, phoenix-like, from the pandemic fires.
The end of COVID-19 is not known, but the promise of vaccines helps. The economy is fighting back, including the creative economy. Many theatre companies remain publicly dormant, yet behind the scenes, each continues to pencil in plans for their future. When the time is right, they will emerge to again share their special brands of performances. Until then, each encourages their patrons and the public to stay in touch to be updated about progress toward that day when the curtains rise again. ....
