Valley News - NH sewer projects trickle to town taxes

Modified: 7/23/2021 9:24:58 PM
WEST LEBANON Upper Valley municipal managers say the loss of a state grant program that helped New Hampshire towns and cities pay for costly wastewater upgrades will translate to higher tax and utility bills as they work to cover the funding shortfall.
The state’s two-year budget, signed into law last month by Republican Gov. Chris Sununu, reinstates a moratorium on new projects eligible for wastewater state aid grants.
The program, administered by the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services, is intended to offset the multimillion-dollar costs that municipalities can incur while improving their sewer systems and thereby provide an incentive to curb pollution. ....

Valley News - Lebanon plans to create diversity commission

Lebanon plans to create diversity commission
Modified: 7/8/2021 9:29:50 PM
LEBANON City officials say they intend to create a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Commission to advise Lebanon on matters regarding race and sex regardless of warnings that the group’s efforts could conflict with a state law that opponents worry will limit discussions about systemic racism.
The Lebanon City Council voted Wednesday night to schedule a Wednesday, July 21 public hearing on the proposed commission, a step that’s required for changes to the city code.
If passed, the nine-member group could start work promoting training and educational programs, and offering guidance on ways the city can create a “safe, welcoming and inclusive” community this fall. ....

Gender disparities found in town boards across New Hampshire

NH Business Review
41% of localities have no women in top leadership, says NH Women’s Foundation report

In a state that boasts many “firsts” for women in elected office, it might be shocking to learn that 41% of New Hampshire select boards have zero women.
Matters report from the New Hampshire Women’s Foundation details a significant gender gap in elected representation for women at the local level. In 2020, the organization surveyed all 221 towns and found that 37% of the 1,642 people serving on school and select boards are women and just 29% of towns have achieved gender parity or majority women. Data regarding city councils and school boards is forthcoming. ....
