MLK Youth Rally will be held virtually this year


For the first time in 26 years, community members won t accompany students as they march from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s student union to the state Capitol as part of the Martin Luther King Jr. Youth Rally and March.
The program on Jan. 18 — held for years in the state Capitol’s Warner Chamber and last year in the UNL student union — will be livestreamed and available on public access TV, Facebook and Twitter.
Nearly 800 people attended the program last year.
“The committee decided to facilitate the experience virtually to support potential attendees’ health and well-being and recognize that in-person attendance would be limited, if at all, a news release said. ....

Lincoln's new high school will include health sciences focus program


Lincoln’s newest school on the northwest edge of town will include a health sciences focus program, a collaboration with Bryan College of Health Sciences to offer dual-credit courses and a gateway into a variety of medical fields.
“This presents an incredible opportunity for our students to start out on a pathway toward some careers in medical sciences,” said Matt Larson, Lincoln Public Schools associate superintendent for instruction.
The new high school will include two labs similar to those at the Bryan college, where students can get certified as nurse assistants and learn anatomy and physiology.
A hallmark of the new program will be dual-credit courses in anatomy and physiology, with access to the cadaver labs at Bryan, said James Blake, director of strategic initiatives and focus programs at LPS. ....

Zager Guitars donates 700 instruments to LPS

Gary Reber, who manages gifts to the Foundation for Lincoln Public Schools, saw the in-kind donation form pop up on his computer screen, saw the number and the donor, and figured somebody was having some fun.
He recognized the donor s name Dennis Zager and knew the song that rocketed him and partner Rick Evans to stardom in 1969 “In the Year 2525.”
It’s not 2525, but the song that made two Nebraska boys famous is about man’s inclination to do himself in, and if there were ever a year that seemed possible . . . .
So, yeah.
