On Friday, May 14, the Margaret Walker Center at Jackson State University hosted via its Facebook page a virtual gallery talk of the May 1970 Gibbs-Green Tragedy. Featured was a collection of 60 photographs by Doris Derby, Ph.D., that have never been revealed within an exhibition. Following police shootings on May 14, Phillip Lafayette Gibbs, a 21-year-old junior political science major and James Earl Green, a 17-year-old Jim Hill High School senior who was walking home from work, were murdered. During the pandemonium twelve students were shot while flying debris, glass and brick injured dozens others.  ....

At 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 15, 2021, Jackson State University will hold a special Commencement ceremony for the Class of 1970 on the Gibbs-Green Memorial Plaza.
For the first time ever, members of the Class will have the opportunity to march in their regalia and receive their diplomas, presented by President Thomas K. Hudson, J.D.
In the late hours of May 14 and into the early morning of May 15, 1970, Jackson City Police and Mississippi Highway Patrolmen marched on the Jackson State campus and fired nearly 500 rounds of ammunition in 28 seconds into Alexander Hall, a women’s dormitory. Phillip Lafayette Gibbs, a Junior political science major, and James Earl Green, a Senior at nearby Jim Hill High School, were killed. During the spring of 1970 student protests and demonstrations were rampant throughout American campuses against racism and repression, the Vietnam War and discrimination against women and minorities in education.
John R. Lynch Street was a clearway for linking west Jackson to downtown.
In May white car drivers and their passengers rode through the campus of Jackson State College on Lynch Street and harassed students with racial slurs, accelerated speeds, object throwing and hit-and-runs. Students protested against these harassments. ....
