Tara Butcher, a 39-year-old single leg below-knee amputee athlete, came to Torrey Pines High School July 12 to speak to 78 youth athletes ages 8-17, five coaches and a half dozen parents on the importance of having a positive attitude and mindset for mentally overcoming physical challenges.
“You can achieve and accomplish just about anything if you say you can,” Butcher said.
In 2005, Butcher was driving home on the freeway in San Diego when she was involved in a minor car accident. While pulled over and out of her car, she was struck by another vehicle going 72 mph, catapulting her across two lanes. She was in a coma for 10 days and had to have a metal rod inserted into her right leg and her left leg had to be amputated. She has made an incredible recovery since her accident ....

Track & Field Garners Three First-Team All-America Honors Friday

EUGENE, Ore. - The Clemson track and field program collected three first-team All-America honors during the final day of men’s competition at the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday evening. Clemson’s men finished in a tie for 20th overall after scoring 20 points as a team, making it the Tigers’ best team finish since the 2002 championships.  Roje Stona earned first-team All-American honors in the men’s discus after finishing as the national runner-up after throwing 61.94 meters (203 feet, 2inches) in the second round. Friday evening saw Stona complete a series of  55.55m-61.94m-X-57.89m-60.35m-61.20m. Stona’s final result allowed him to become the first Tiger to collect first-team honors in the event since Jack Harkness finished second overall at the 1982 championships.
