YWCA of Central Massachusetts domestic violence Marcia Szymansk

WORCESTER – Citing a sharp increase in the number of people seeking help locally, representatives for regional social services and the District Attorney’s office called on the public to help combat a growing domestic violence problem fueled by the pandemic.
According to Deborah Hall, executive director of the YWCA of Central Massachusetts, her organization had seen a 97% increase in domestic violence victims – around 60 to 70 people – reaching out for assistance in the past six weeks, many of whom were in more dire situations than the YWCA would typically see.
Similarly, Marcia Szymanski, executive director and CEO of New Hope, said her statewide anti-domestic violence organization has seen a 76% increase in hotline calls and 51% increase in requests for counseling “since things opened up” in the state as the pandemic weakened a few months ago. ....

Overdoses up dramatically
From April to December 2020, non-fatal drug overdoses reported to Taunton police went up by 64% compared to those months the year before, increasing from 109 in 2019 to 179 in 2020.
According to Dr. Brian O Connor, president and medical director of Middlesex Recovery Norton, one potential cause, which was a problem before the pandemic, is the growing prevalence of fentanyl on the street and in other street drugs.
Probably the number one reason it happened is counterfeit pill production meaning that patients are coming into our office stating that they purchased an oxycodone or a Xanax on the street and it actually was fentanyl, he said. ....
