This week is National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week. It’s a week to honor public safety communications officers in E-911 centers. The City of Roanoke will recognize dispatchers throughout the week. Roanoke’s dispatchers handle more than 275,000 calls a year. In Montgomery County, the Board of Supervisors is expected to pass a resolution tonight, honoring the work of dispatchers.
Virginia’s Redistricting Commission will meet today. It will discuss the budget, redistricting website and take public comments. The group was formed to limit political influence in the redistricting process and is made up of lawmakers and citizens. ....

ROANOKE, Va – During Black History Month, 10 News continues to recognize the contributions and accomplishments of African-American leaders across southwest Virginia.
Superintendents in our corner of the Commonwealth are teaching lessons that go far beyond what can be learned in a textbook.
The path to becoming a teacher wasn’t always clear for Lynchburg Superintendent Crystal Edwards.
“I did not think I could have a sustainable lifestyle based on teaching but could on engineering,” Edwards said. ....

Martinsville schools to install gunshot detection devices in all buildings
Device is about the same size as a smoke detector

The district will install gunshot detection devices in all of its buildings.
The purchase and installation of these devices was funded by an approved $200,000 request to the Virginia Department of Education.
The device, which is about the same size as a smoke detector, automatically notifies dispatchers and police if it hears the sound of a gunshot. The technology is also able to tell law enforcement where in the building the sound came from.
“It’s a tool that’s out of sight, out of mind,” said Martinsville City Schools director of security T.J. Slaughter. “It’s peace of mind, it’s there when you need it.” ....

Martinsville Schools to become first division in the state with complete gunshot detection


Martinsville City Schools will become the first school division in the state to have a gunshot detection system in all of its buildings.
T.J. Slaughter, director of school safety and emergency management, applied for a state grant through the Virginia Department of Education in the summer of 2018 and, in November of last year he told the school board he had received more than $80,000 from the state and a local match totaling $100,691.
Martinsville Schools were included in $6 million School Security Equipment Grants announced by Gov. Ralph Northam for 102 school divisions.
But there wasn’t enough money to do the entire job. ....
