At the Oakton Community College Board of Trustees organizational meeting on April 27, the trustees elected Martha Burns (Evanston) as the board s new chair for a one-year term. Also in the restructuring, Marie Lynn Toussaint (Evanston) was elected to serve as vice-chair and Paul Kotowski (Niles) as secretary. Akash Patel (Skokie) will serve as the new student trustee for the upcoming academic year.
Before the restructuring, trustees William Stafford (Evanston) and Benjamin Salzberg (Northbrook) were sworn into office after running unopposed in April s election. Both board members were re-elected to serve a six-year term. ....

James F. Burns: The Civil War as seen through the eyes of a young boy


Born on a farm. Died in a church. Clinton Burns, my ancestral cousin, grew up in western Pennsylvania in the 1850s when the slavery issue was red-hot and even fracturing families. Young Clinton got swept up in this cauldron of conflict.
Even the wood used for flag poles was politicized. A hickory pole was in honor of Andrew Jackson, “Old Hickory,” while anti-slavery sentiments were symbolized by poplar wood.
Clinton’s memoirs reveal his father’s feelings on the flag pole issue. “My father thought slavery to be a sin against God, a crime against his fellow man, and a blot on our country’s reputation. He used poplar wood.” ....
