ETSU to hold spring commencement


Series of events begins today, concludes on Sunday afternoon
After holding spring and fall commencement ceremonies virtually in 2020, East Tennessee State University will host ceremonies on campus this week for its roughly 2,000 spring 2021 graduates as well as graduates from spring and fall 2020.
Instead of the traditional two Saturday ceremonies, the university will host several ceremonies over the course of four days.
ETSU will have a series of safety protocols in place for graduates, guests and participants:
Face coverings will be required at all times for graduates, guests and staff while inside the Mini-Dome.
Attendance is limited, and each graduate will receive four tickets for guests. ....

ETSU to resume Johnson & Johnson vaccine clinics, starting on Friday


East Tennessee State University will resume its Johnson & Johnson vaccine clinics this week, which have been on hold since use of the vaccine was paused while federal officials investigated reports of rare but serious blood clots in people who received the vaccine.
After a 10-day pause in which the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention investigated the vaccine, it was authorized for use again on April 23 with a warning about the potential side effect.
Of the seven million doses administered at the time of the pause, 15 people — all women under 50 — developed the rare condition. ....

ETSU hosting variety of events celebrating Black History Month in February


The following programs are free and open to the public to attend virtually:
The True Black History Museum (Virtual Black History Exhibit) will be on display virtually on Monday, Feb. 15, at 7 p.m. This museum was established to preserve the history of African American people and educate others on the contributions they have made to mankind. The collection is comprised of over 1,000 artifacts dating from the late 1700s to the 21st century. Go to http://bit.ly/3q2Buz1 to register and receive the link to attend.
A “Black Lives Matter vs. Blue Lives Matter Discussion” will take place Monday, Feb. 22, at 5 p.m. via Zoom. A diverse discussion panel will present different perspectives on the topic, not only addressing the problem but also working toward providing solutions. Panelists include Trevor King, an activist; ETSU alumna Susan Swanay; ETSU student Amyre Cain; Karl Turner, chief of the Johnson City Police Department; and Cesar Gracia, chief of ETSU Public Safety.
