Council's broadband licence cancelled after sub-leasing out airwaves

The Marlborough District Council breached an agreement with the government by allowing telecommunication businesses to provide broadband off the back of its licence.

The council secured a licence from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment in 2018 to bring internet and mobile coverage to residents of Marlborough, on the condition that it did so within two years and six months.
But when the deadline came around in July last year, the council publicly announced it was ditching its plans to get into telecommunications and moving onto data collection. The council realised it would cost about $41 million to provide 99 per cent of its residents with decent broadband. ....

Despite Port Marlborough offer to help EcoWorld clear out the building, Reuhman said the terms were “unreasonable”.
Reuhman claimed he had filed proceeds in the High Court last Friday, and that EcoWorld should not be made to leave the building until a judge had addressed the proceedings.
It followed from last week, when Reuhman and his team protested outside the Local Democracy Conference held in Blenheim.

Minister surveys damage to hard hit Marlborough vineyards still under water

“No one has been injured, it seems like an exemplary response,” O’Connor said.

Minister of Agriculture Damien O’Connor saw some of the damage in Marlborough caused by heavy rain.

The Minister’s first stop was a vineyard near the Wairau River, just over State Highway 63. Stop bank protection had largely saved that vineyard from disaster. The next vineyard, on Waihopai Valley Rd, was a different story. ....

Marlborough District Council releases beach vehicle ban bylaw with warning

A new report, released last week, shows the Marlborough District Council was between a rock and a hard place before opting for a bylaw banning all vehicles, including quad bikes, from a 45km stretch of coastline.
The only exception was for fishers launching their boats at two distinct spots; one on Marfells Beach and one on Ward Beach.
The bylaw was released last Thursday after a year-long tug-of-war between those who thought vehicles damaged the coast and those who thought most quad bikers were eco-conscious.
The bylaw would go out to the public from mid-July. ....
