Mark Alan Atha, 62, left his home in Iowa City, Iowa on March 31, 2021 to go to Hawkeye Heaven. Mark was born in Des Moines, Iowa to parents Robert and Barbara (Allbee) Atha. Mark’s mother, brother Paul, Aunt Marlene and friend Karen were able to be at Mark’s side during his last few days.
He spent his childhood years in Marshalltown, Iowa, enjoying his many friends and athletics, mainly track and cross-country earning ribbons and medals. He loved playing Little League games on the Iowa Veterans Home ball field where he grew up as his family lived on the grounds. He enjoyed visiting with many of the residents and staff at IVH. He was later afforded a chance to coach for his brother Paul’s team. After graduation from high school in 1976, Mark attended Marshalltown Community College and participated on their tennis team where he earned a State Championship. Mark then attended Cornell College in Mount Vernon for a Bachelor of Arts degree. His main work hist ....

Marshalltown’s biggest employer is providing free college and trade school opportunities for their employees, including dependents of employees.
Members of Marshalltown Community School Board heard from JBS Marshalltown General Manager Todd Carl at Monday night’s board meeting about the “Better Futures Program,” in which JBS USA will give employees and their dependents the opportunity to pursue associates degrees and trade certificates tuition free, paid for by JBS.
Carl said one intention of the “Better Futures” program is to grow and sustain JBS’s workforce. ....

Snow and abnormally low temperatures meant farmers were not planting row crops for most of the week ending April 18, 2021, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service. Statewide there were 4.7 days suitable for fieldwork during the week. Field activities for the week included applying anhydrous and dry fertilizer, spreading manure, tilling fields and planting.
Topsoil moisture levels rated 6% very short, 23% short, 67% adequate and 4% surplus. Subsoil moisture levels rated 10% very short, 32% short, 54% adequate and 4% surplus.
Although most Iowa farmers continued to wait for warmer temperatures, 4% of Iowa’s corn crop has been planted. Nearly two-thirds of Iowa’s expected oat crop has been planted, 5 days ahead of last year and 6 days ahead of the 5-year average. Statewide 12% of the oat crop has emerged, 2 days ahead of average. There were scattered reports of soybeans planted. ....
