Spring cleaning is on its way in Marshalltown.
A clean-up is set for 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday with aims to help beautify Marshalltown’s downtown area. Marshalltown Central Business District and the first ward of Marshalltown have partnered to promote and organize the Team Up to Clean Up event, which will focus on cleaning the entire ward one zone encompassing main street, JBS Marshalltown and the Marshalltown Hospital.
Those looking to volunteer can meet at Supermarket Villachuato’s north parking lot beginning at 8:30 a.m. to sign-in. Volunteers can let organizers know what area they’d like to clean up. Trash bags, gloves and masks will be provided, with volunteers encouraged to bring rakes, garden clippers, brooms or anything else to aid in the clean-up. The City of Marshalltown and ....

Flower baskets to return downtown | News, Sports, Jobs

lbradstream@timesrepublican.com
With warmer weather right around the corner, efforts are beginning to bring a sense of normalcy to downtown Marshalltown. The flower baskets, which hang on the poles on Main Street, will return in June after a year-long absence due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Travis Hornberg, who chairs a design committee affiliated with the Marshalltown Central Business District and helped replace the trash receptacles on Main Street, said the flower baskets are a true sign things are returning to normal.
“It means people are getting out and doing things again,” he said.
The flower baskets do require maintenance, and a group of people to carry that maintenance out every day. The baskets were canceled in 2020 because the committee did not want a group of people gathered together for a length of time to take care of the plants. ....

96 flower baskets hang along Main Street in Marshalltown. These baskets bring pride to the community
As winter’s fury looms over Central Iowa, once again, I remind myself that this is February and what else am I to expect? This winter won’t last forever, and Punxsutawney Phil is just a captive groundhog what does he really know? Phil only works one day a year, and the remainder of his days are in a warm terrarium kept within a library. “Groundhogenes” is exclusively understood by Phil and the president of the Groundhog Club, so perhaps the club president misunderstood? Anyone ever wonder if Phil gets cabin fever? I know I certainly do over the winter months. Nonetheless whether we believe the legend or not, the warm months of spring, and summer will eventually be here. In the meantime, I will look forward to one of my favorite warm weather plans for the downtown. ....

Part I: City Council candidates Q&A — Raymond Starks | News, Sports, Jobs

Starks
Raymond Starks is one of four candidates interviewing for the soon-to-be vacated first ward city council seat currently held by Sue Cahill.
Starks is an attorney with the law firm Moore, McKibben, Goodman and Lorenz. He serves as the economic vitality chair of the Marshalltown Central Business District and is a member of the Board of Adjustments.
Is there a particular issue or set of issues that caused you to submit a letter of interest in the vacant
council position?
Quality of life issues are the reason why I submitted a letter of interest. A more prosperous downtown is necessary for a high quality of life, because it means more dollars being spent here rather than somewhere else. Quality of life improvements would help foster a more vibrant community, meaning people want to spend more time here. Quality of life issues are central to what the Council does, and I believe I would bring a unique perspective to addressing these issues if given the opportu ....
