After 24 years of serving the Dallas-Fort Worth area, San Luis Obispo Police Department s new chief, Rick Scott, is happy to call the Central Coast his new home.

San Luis Obispo PD partners with mental health association to vaccinate homeless individuals

KCBX s Angel Russell reports.
As public health experts continue to push the population towards herd immunity against COVID-19, San Luis Obispo County is beginning the work of vaccinating homeless individuals housed within their shelter systems by bringing the vaccine to them.
This week, Transitions Mental Health Association teamed up with the San Luis Obispo Police Department to provide the Johnson & Johnson vaccine to people living within homeless encampments.
Lt. John Villanti with SLO PD said it’s not a simple task finding individuals since there are several miles of encampments scattered throughout the city.
“It wasn’t like we knew exactly where they were, Villanti said. It took us 3-4 hours to walk many many miles of the open space to find the encampments and if they were occupied, offer the services of providing the vaccination for them.” ....

By JOSH FRIEDMAN
As part of San Luis Obispo County’s effort to remake the area surrounding Pirate’s Cove, officials on Thursday evicted the homeless who had been living in an encampment at the parking lot above the popular beach.
In March, the SLO County Board of Supervisors decided to incorporate Cave Landing into the county parks systems. Cave Landing is the cliffside area that leads to Pirate’s Cove, which had traditionally been a nude beach and scene for counterculture in SLO County.
On Thursday, workers launched a cleanup of Cave Landing, which includes removing garbage and graffiti, as well as a redesign of the parking lot. ....

SAN LUIS OBISPO – The City is releasing an “after-action review” report of the response by the San Luis Obispo Police Department to a protest on Jun. 1, 2020 to the community. The City Council along with the City Manager requested the Police Department to examine its response to the use of tear gas on protesters, who had entered the US 101 freeway and blocked several downtown streets. The City Council is expected to discuss the report at its Feb. 16 meeting; the public is invited to review the staff report and after action report ahead of time.
After action reviews are a common tool used by police agencies following a significant incident to document the response and provide a foundation for community dialog. “It’s important for the Police Department, the community and the City Council to fully understand all aspects of this major incident. We want to understand what made this protest different from the nearly 70 others the City supported last year, what led up to ....
