Monadnock Ledger-Transcript - Peterborough to recount Planning Board votes after near-tie

Published: 5/17/2021 4:15:59 PM
Peterborough is holding a recount after one Planning Board candidate won by just one vote in last week’s election.
Although Stephanie Hurley easily won the first of two open three-year positions on the Planning Board with 808 votes, incumbent Sarah Steinberg Heller won the second seat with 502 votes: just one more vote than runner-up Blair Weiss’s 501. Weiss requested the recount late last week after the town’s May 11 vote, Town Clerk Linda Guyette said.
The recount will cover votes for all six candidates for the two three-year positions, Guyette said: Hurley, Steinberg Heller, and Weiss, along with Lisa Stone, Christopher DiLoreto, and Lindsay Dreyer, who received 407, 317, and 350 votes, respectively. ....

Peterborough’s Article 2 – and a Planning Board candidate who backed it – both won out at Town Meeting Tuesday, as voters passed all warrant articles and elected new members to the Planning, Zoning and Select boards while reelecting Town Clerk Linda Guyette.
New Planning Board member Stephanie Hurley said she hopes to work well with her colleagues after being driven to run for office by unpleasant experiences working with the board as a citizen, after petitions to repeal and/or modify Peterborough’s Traditional Neighborhood Overlay Zones I and II two years ago eventually led to a pair of lawsuits. ....

2021 Community Partner Awards (COVID edition)

Recognizing community partners for their flexibility and adaptation in the face of COVID
This year our community partners had to adapt as much as faculty to changed circumstances. They had to go remote with us, offering remote feedback, engagement and activities. They had to consider whether an internship or project could even be done remotely, redesign entire projects and, in some cases, manage COVID protocols and precautions to allow students to participate directly. We conceived of this COVID-era version of our community partner award while debriefing the semester with Mary Val Palumbo in Nursing. Mary Val was raving about a particular community partner, who had just really taken it on herself to help students complete their service-learning activities. Thanks to the following partner and the professor s story of her work we opened the nominations and are privileged to recognize these 10 partners for continuing to work with us during the pandemic. ....

NEWS: ALC contributes chapter to Urban Agroecology book
ALC co-director Martha Caswell and other members of the ALC contributed a chapter to a new book titled
Urban Agroecology, Interdisciplinary Research and Future Directions. The chapter discusses an ongoing participatory action research (PAR) project with urban and peri-urban agroecology project partners in Burlington, Vermont. For years, the ALC has been building a relationship and working with  the Vermont Community Garden Network, the Intervale Center, New Farms for New Americans, and the Catamount Farm. Components of this PAR process have resulted in participatory mapping and inventorying of agroecological practices with the Intervale Center, student design projects facilitated through PSS courses taught by Stephanie Hurley and Annie White, and upcoming collaborations for a summer research fellowship with VEPART to tackle pest management challenges. ....

First shot: COVID-19 vaccines arrive on island

As of Wednesday afternoon, 21 caregivers at Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center had received the Pfizer vaccine for COVID-19.
First in line was Dr. Dana Kerr, an emergency room physician at the hospital who got the vaccine on Tuesday evening. Kerr has been treating the growing wave of patients with the virus over the past few weeks in Kodiak, putting her squarely into the first tier of Alaskans designated to get the vaccine.
She also volunteered, having tracked the vaccine’s development for months with pharmacist Stephanie Hurley and others at the hospital.
“We had been talking quite a bit about it since May. … They had asked who would be willing to take it first, and I had volunteered,” Kerr said.  ....
