House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education and Services has said that it was an embarrassment to have school children still sitting on bare floor and learning under trees in Nigeria in 21st century.
The Committee also raised an alarm over the increasing number of out-of-school and not-in-school children, placing the number between 11 to 13 million in Nigeria.
The Committee’s regrets were conveyed in a statement jointly signed by the Chairman and deputy Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Julius Ihonvbere and Usman Zanna respectively and made available to Vanguard in Abuja Wednesday night. ....

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajiya Sadiya Umar-Farouk, in this interview, explains how the recently launched Alternate School Programme will reduce the number of out-of-school children in the country among other things.
 
The launch of the Alternate School Programme has reopened conversations on the increasing number of out-of-school children in Nigeria. What is this programme meant to achieve?
It’s an intervention programme focused on providing education in a flexible way to out-of-school children (OOSC). It also provides them with social investment programme benefits. The Alternate School Programme (ASP) also targets the humanitarian and social challenges faced by the OOSC. ....

Alternate School Programme and the Humanitarian Imperative

On Tuesday January 26, 2021, President Muhammadu Buhari inaugurated an 18-member Presidential Steering Committee on the Alternate School Programme, (ASP). The President charged the committee to coordinate and lead the deployment of a National Plan which will address the issue of out-of-school children in the country.
Sadiya Umar Farouq, Honourable Minister of Humanitarian Affairs Disaster Management and Social Development was named co-chair alongside Mallam Adamu Adamu, Honourable Minister of Education.
The choice of Farouq as co-chair is instructive when the mandate of the steering committee is taken into consideration.
The Alternate School Programme has as its mandate to improve access to education for all Nigerian children in alignment with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG-4) which aims to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all”. ....
