More than 100 teacher unions, three on Cape, come out against state education commissioner


More than 100 Massachusetts teacher unions, including three on Cape Cod, have voted “no confidence” in the performance of the state’s top education official during the pandemic.
The Bourne Educators Association, the Mashpee Teachers Association and Sandwich Education Association were among the unions whose members cited concerns with state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Commissioner Jeffrey Riley’s “lack of leadership,” the Massachusetts Teachers Association said in a statement Tuesday.
The declaration of no confidence that the MTA said was signed by 104 educator unions and three non-union education groups said Riley and DESE have made changes in policies and reopening metrics without consulting educators, unions or individual school districts.  ....

As Massachusetts health officials face the latest surge of coronavirus cases, pediatricians are warning of a growing health crisis in children.
A panel of doctors and child advocates spoke before the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education Tuesday about the worsening mental health of school-aged children. The discussion was held just before a vote about proposed changes to K-12 learning across the state to increase the amount of face time students have with teachers. The amendment passed, 7-4.
“We have to recognize this one truth: We’re going to lose more kids to suicide than COVID,” Dr. Mathieu Bermingham, the medical director of children services of Roxbury and a consultant to the Department of the Mental Health in early childhood mental health, told board members Tuesday. ....
