Church hosting fundraising evening of drama, music and poetry

The Swindon and District Samaritans is hosting its first fundraising event with an audience since lockdown began.
Guests can enjoy entertainment inside St Michael s Church from 7.30pm on August 21. The £10 ticket price includes a drink.
Tickets can be bought from the town s Lighthouse Bookshop.
Director John Williams said: I had the idea in March of this year to organise an event of lighthearted drama and poetry and a little guitar with a glass of wine.
The evening is titled Phenomenal Women from the poem by Maya Angelou which will end the evening.
Swindon and District Samaritans offer people the time and space to talk through whatever is troubling them and help to explore feelings to alleviate distress. ....

Rochdale, Oldham and District Samaritans is encouraging people to sign up to Samarathon, the charity’s annual virtual marathon, and set themselves the challenge of walking, jogging or running the equivalent of a marathon distance during July, helping the charity’s volunteers continue to provide vital emotional support.
Launching in Mental Health Awareness Week, listening volunteers at the Rochdale, Oldham and District branch are encouraging local residents to make the most of the long summer days after months of lockdown by getting active and being out in nature, which is known to help boost physical and mental wellbeing. ....

Samaritans in Swindon gets Covid grant to help cope with 22 per cent rise in calls

NEW volunteer listeners are being trained by the Samaritans as it contends with a more than 20 per cent rise in callers during the pandemic.
Swindon and District Samaritans has been awarded £3,500 from Wiltshire Community Foundation’s Coronavirus Response and Recovery Fund to buy new headsets and carry out extra deep cleaning at its branch office in Swindon. The money was donated to the fund by the Oakfield development, a new neighbourhood of 239 sustainable homes in east Swindon.
The headsets will allow new volunteers to be mentored remotely while they gain experience of taking calls.
“The mentors listen into calls until the volunteers are ready to take their first step on their own,” said listening and publicity volunteer Maggie Gill. ....
