Masks no longer required by law, only guidelines in Austin, Texas

Under pressure from Gov. Greg Abbott, Austin and Travis County public health leaders on Friday chose to end the local mask mandate, thus avoiding a potential courtroom conflict with the governor over pandemic policy.
Dr. Mark Escott, whose tenure as interim Austin-Travis County health authority began only months before the coronavirus pandemic gripped Central Texas, announced in one of his last public briefings on the virus that businesses would no longer be required to make sure partially vaccinated or unvaccinated customers wear masks.
Now is not the time for us to be in conflict, now is the time for us to focus on the message, said Escott, who is stepping away from his role as county health authority at the end of the month. And the message is that unvaccinated people or partially vaccinated people need to wear a mask when they re out in public. ....

Austin wrestles with Abbott on masks, sets up rules to restore events

With Gov. Greg Abbott s order banning local governments from imposing mask mandates on businesses taking effect Friday, Austin and Travis County health officials on Wednesday said they were conferring with lawyers about whether even loosened local mask rules can remain.
Dr. Mark Escott, whose tenure as Austin-Travis County health authority ends on Memorial Day, relaxed mask rules Tuesday to give business owners the option to let fully vaccinated people unmask indoors if fewer than 500 customers are inside.
The change also was good news for outdoor music venues, farmers markets and other outdoor establishments, whose owners also can let fully vaccinated people unmask if fewer than 2,500 are gathered. Special permits can be granted to allow for more unmasking in crowds of 2,500 and larger, according to Escott. ....

Mask mandate in Austin, Travis County remains in effect this weekend

The new changes can be implemented to either Escott s health authority rules, which require businesses, by law, to ensure customers and employees cover their faces while inside, or Austin Public Health s risk-based guidelines, which are not legal requirements but some aspects are enforced as part of the county’s health codes.
Masks are still required in the city and in the county in public places, Escott clarified Friday, saying that, while he was surprised by the CDC s announcement Thursday, it wasn t completely unexpected.  Again, we re still working on what will end up in the rules and what will end up as recommendations, but we will have that Monday and Tuesday and will be discussing that in the joint session. ....

Austin health officials weigh new CDC mask guidance, moving community to safer Stage 2

Austin health officials weigh new CDC mask guidance, moving community to safer Stage 2
Austin Public Health officials on Tuesday said they are trying to figure out how to apply the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention s new mask guidelines, just as they are preparing to loosen coronavirus pandemic restrictions.
The CDC s updated guidelines include new rules that say Americans who are fully vaccinated can unmask while walking, running, hiking or biking outdoors alone or with members of their household.
Fully vaccinated people also don’t need to wear a mask during small outdoor gatherings with fully vaccinated family and friends, or at gatherings with a mixture of vaccinated and unvaccinated people, the CDC said. ....
