Community Heritage Grants Recipients 2018
The Community Heritage Grants (CHG) program provides grants of up to $15,000 to community organisations such as libraries, archives, museums, genealogical and historical societies, multicultural and Indigenous groups. The grants are provided to assist with the preservation of locally owned, but nationally significant collections of materials that are publicly accessible including artefacts, letters, diaries, maps, photographs, and audio visual material.
In 2018, 60 grants were awarded, totalling $367,470.

Calls to prevent cyclists' deaths on Habana training route

Habana residents are concerned it will take a cyclistâs death to prompt what they say are necessary changes to roads along a popular training route.
The 31.8km âHabana Loopâ covers a section of the Bruce Highway at North Mackay as well as Mackay-Habana Road, Farleigh-Habana Road, Sugarshed Road and Heaths Road.
Habana resident Wendy Lindsay said she got a âfrightâ after a close call with a cyclist, only stopping her vehicle in the nick of time when she saw the riderâs small single light in the corner of her eye.
Habana and District Progress Association president Palmina Rae said while the community knew it could not change the roads being part of the designated training circuit, it wanted them improved for both driversâ and cyclistsâ safety. ....

Not even a pandemic could stop the Habana community from getting in the festive spirit for its annual Carols Under the Stars event.
Now in its 28th year, hundreds of community members gathered on Saturday night under a giant Christmas tree adorned with decorations made by locals.
Mackay City Band, Mackay Ukulele Group and 2tone played Christmas tunes.
There was even a visit from Santa himself.
The event was hosted by the Habana Carols Under the Stars Committee - a subcommittee of the Habana and District Progress Association.Â

Committee chair Peter Bonaventura said while there were some slight changes to the event because of COVID restrictions, the community came together to show their support. ....
