Two under-appreciated waterfalls in the Hokonui Hills are now accessible for the passably fit, thanks to a hard-working Winton Rotary Club
Sir Bill English has briefly emerged from a carefully lowered profile to help draw the spotlight to a scarcely-known Southland attraction.
The 24.5m Makarewa Falls, reportedly the highest in lowland Southland, and the pretty Staircase Falls have long been celebrated by Hokonui area locals, but access difficulty kept their profile largely under the radar.
Now a labour of love and perspiration from a handful of Winton Rotary Club members has opened them up, via a blazed trail offering a steepish six hour return walk, which the former Prime Minister and Finance Minister officially opened on Friday. ....

Southland District Council 'tone deaf', resident says

Among the hardest hit will be Gorge Road [19 per cent or $387 increase]; Nightcaps [18 per cent or $430 increase]; Stewart Island [18 per cent or $344; Orepuki [17 per cent or $197]; Tuatapere [17 per cent or $431]; Ohai [17 per cent or $387] and Tokanui [17 per cent or $330].
At the other end of the scale, Thornbury faces an average four per cent, or $64 increase, Browns a five per cent increase [$88], and Woodlands a 6 per cent increase [$98].
Ohai resident Asha Carr said she believed the council was tone deaf to propose such high hikes for many people, given some were already struggling financially and with stress due to losing jobs during Covid. ....

Provincial mayors call for rural bank branches to be made mandatory

A “glorified ATM machine” is not going to cut it as a provincial mayor rallies leaders to make rural bank branches mandatory.
South Wairarapa Mayor Alex Beijen wanted social responsibility to provide banking facilities in rural areas to be part of the Reserve Bank’s licence to operate.
He is rallying mayors across New Zealand to sign onto a petition to the Prime Minister to intervene.
“Over the past 10 years, we in the South Wairarapa have experienced a full withdrawal of banking branches from our district. An area of nearly 3000 sq/km without a single banking employee.” ....
