Baker City man gets 15-year prison term for child pornography


BAKER CITY — A former guard at the Powder River Correctional Facility, who has spent nearly a year behind bars at the Baker County Jail, will spend the next 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to child pornography charges on Tuesday, March 9, in Baker County Circuit Court.
Judge Matt Shirtcliff sided with District Attorney Greg Baxter in taking the harsher end of a plea agreement that ranged from five years to 15 years in prison in sentencing David Leon Cernazanu.
As part of the agreement, Cernazanu, 49, pleaded guilty to three counts of second-degree encouraging child sexual abuse, a Class C felony.
Cernazanu will be given credit for time served and the ability to earn good time toward earlier release while in prison. ....

Baker couple found dead in their home


A friend who routinely checked in on a Baker City couple found the man and woman both dead in their home Saturday morning, Police Chief Ray Duman said Monday.
The deceased are Wendi Page, 51, and Peter L. Cassinelli IV, 53, who both lived at 2985 Cedar St.
Police were dispatched to the house at about 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
“There were no signs of forced entry and no signs of trauma,” Duman said, noting that Page and Cassinelli both had “severe medical issues.”
Dr. Eric Lamb, Baker County medical examiner, and District Attorney Greg Baxter responded as part of the investigation along with Duman and Baker City Police detectives. ....
