The District Attorney General released a report Thursday on overdose deaths and the criminal justice system in 2020.

KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. District Attorney General Charme Allen released a report about fatal overdoses and the criminal justice system on Thursday, finding that 76 people died within one year of being released from law enforcement.
In total, in 2020, the report says 150 people who died of an overdose were arrested in Knox County in the 5 years before their death. Most of them were men 71%. ....

UT Legal Clinic hosts community panel on race, children, police in Knox County Schools


On Thursday, the University of Tennessee School of Law hosted a panel as a part of their Critical Conversations series that focuses on race and social issues. This panel, titled Critical Conversations: Race, Children, and Police in Knox County Schools, comes considering the recent protest over the death of 17-year-old Anthony Thompson Jr.
KPD officer Jonathan Clabough fatally shot Anthony Thompson Jr. at Austin-East High School last week. Last night, District Attorney General Charme Allen announced that they would not be filing charges against officer Clabough, prompting protests in downtown Knoxville.
For the panel, over 200 attended. A moment of silence was held at the start for both Anthony Thompson Jr. and his family. The panel was hosted by Professor of Law Wendy Bach as well as a group of students at the School of Law. They moderated the chat and provided questions to the speakers from the audience. ....

Protestors flood streets downtown after district attorney announces no charges for officer involved in high school student's death


Wednesday night, protestors took to the streets of downtown Knoxville and Fort Sanders after District Attorney General Charme Allen announced that her office would not be filing charges against Knoxville Police Department Officer Jonathon Clabough, who fatally shot 17-year-old Anthony Thompson Jr. during a dispute at Austin-East High School last week.
Allen said that according to the police body cam footage that was released Wednesday, Clabough believed he was acting in self-defense.  
Police were initially called to Austin-East after Thompson was accused of beating his girlfriend at school by her mother. Four officers then confronted Thompson in a school bathroom, where they discovered that he had a gun. ....

Knoxville DA says officers will NOT be charged in the shooting death of Anthony Thompson Jr., 17, as she releases bodycam and surveillance footage of the fatal confrontation at Austin-East high school
Thompson, a 17-year-old black student, was a junior at Austin-East Magnet High School in Knoxville, Tennessee, when he was shot to death by police on April 12
Knoxville District Attorney General Charme Allen said during a press conference that the teen s family had begged her not to release the tapes today
The footage was released after the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation gave two different versions of the killing
The incident started after Thompson was accused of domestic violence against an ex-girlfriend  ....
