The go-ahead for a retail development for Showgrounds Hill, the SC RSA building s demolition, and the return of a beloved cat missing for two years, all made the headlines in December, as Doug Sail discovered in the final instalment of our series looking back at the year that was.
The controversial Timaru retail development proposal at Showgrounds Hill was granted resource consent on December 11, less than a day after a ruling that the application was not headed for public consultation.
Permission for Auckland-based developer Redwood Group (RG) to turn the 12-hectare site site into a 34,000 square-metre retail centre was approved by independent commissioner Allan Cubitt. ....

Countdown, Bunnings Warehouse, confirmed for Showgrounds as sale completed

Gapes said the company was working with a number of tenants now it had Countdown and Bunnings finalised.
“Most of these will be new to Timaru and we should be able to announce these early next year,” he said.
Bunnings New Zealand director Jacqui Coombes said “we’ve been searching for a location that allows us to serve the Timaru community for some time, and we’re pleased to confirm we plan to become a tenant at the development when it’s constructed”.
“We expect the store to create more than 80 new team member positions when it opens in 2022.

The threat of a Judicial Review hangs over a proposed retail centre development at Timaru s Showgrounds Hill.
On Tuesday, a Timaru District Council spokesman confirmed it had “received correspondence on behalf of Timaru Town Centre Ratepayers Action Group (TCRAG) giving notice of their intent to lodge an application for judicial review regarding public notification” for the proposed development which was granted resource consents on Friday.
The decision, by council-appointed independent commissioner Allan Cubitt, granted Auckland-based developer Redwood Group non-publicly notified consents for subdivision and land-use to turn the 12 hectare site into a 34,000sqm shopping centre. ....
