Massena Neighborhood Center serving 718 people this year, adapting to pandemic

Due to the pandemic, face masks and sanitizers are being added to the gifts being given by the Massena Neighborhood Center’s Christmas program this year. Alcoa volunteer Didi Grow was among the 20 volunteers organizing food and gifts Saturday, Dec. 12, to being given to 718 Massena area residents in need this holiday. NCNow photo

MASSENA – The holiday spirit of giving is still alive at the Massena Neighborhood Center, despite the challenges of the pandemic this year.
This year 718 individuals in need are being served, made up of 303 children, 352 adults and 63 seniors, said Emily LaShomb, director of the center at 61 Beach St. ....

Group of volunteers assemble Christmas packages for needy Saturday at Massena Neighborhood Center


MASSENA — The Christmas spirit was on display and in action Saturday morning at the Massena Neighborhood Center as volunteers assembled bundles of holiday cheer for those in need.
Emily S. LaShomb, the director of the Neighborhood Center, has been working on the Christmas program for four years, and for the last two years has been assisted by Becky Clark, the center’s Christmas Coordinator.
“She’s my right-hand man,” Ms. LaShomb said. “I couldn’t do it without her.”
In the center’s large activity room, tables were covered with hundreds of paper bags, and down the middle of the room were stacks of canned goods, boxed dinners and other pantry staples ready for sorting and packaging. ....
