Opinion: The most important subject taught at UM is its history

Western philosophy has tied moral decency with intellectual capacity. In short, a person who wants to live the good life probably needs some knowledge of what good is. Unsurprisingly, a person seeking this knowledge might begin at a place promising all sorts of knowledge: the modern university.
There are some problems with this approach. The antagonists of the last few centuries those who enjoyed massive systems of murder and plunder and slavery and apartheid usually came from “enlightened” places, including here.
The University of Mississippi founded for the slavers’ sons has employed, educated and empowered some of the cruelest people to walk this continent. It has done so openly and lovingly. The suffering caused by this school might be immeasurable, but measure it we must. The need for a reckoning has always been here and has never passed. ....

University of Mississippi Continues to Study the History of Enslaved People on Campus : The Journal of Blacks in Higher Education

The University of Mississippi Slavery Research Group began as a 2013 book club. The membership included faculty and administrators. Seven years later, the expanded group that includes members from 17 academic departments continues to seek to expand knowledge of the history of enslaved people on the university’s campus
So far, the group has been able to name and identify only 11 enslaved people who labored on the campus. The Lyceum is now the oldest building on campus. When it was constructed in the 1840s, slave labor was used.
Minutes of an 1849 meeting of a literary society on campus showed that the group authorized paying $1 for the services of an enslaved man named George. ....

Five University of Mississippi professors, along with local community organizations and other campus partners, are exploring the history and impact of slavery at the university and in the Oxford community.
The University of Mississippi Slavery Research Group (UMSRG) started as a 2013 book club consisting of several faculty and administrators where they read and discussed historian Craig Steven Wilder’s book, “Ebony and Ivy: Race, Slavery, and the Troubled History of America’s Universities,” in efforts to “develop a set of preliminary initiatives that faculty and students on the campus might be able to tackle with regard to the history of slavery at the University of Mississippi,” according to the group’s website. ....
