Commission recommends 2% raise for Michigan state officeholders

LANSING  A state compensation commission recommended raises for Michigan s top elected officials.
The State Officers Compensation Commission voted Friday to increase the base salaries for Michigan s governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, secretary of state, legislators and supreme court justices by 2% in 2023 and again in 2024. The commission determines salaries and expense allowances for those jobs.
Its recommendation, which passed 5-1 with Phyllis Browne in opposition and Gerald Hildebrand absent, must be approved by a majority of both the state house and senate.
Most statewide elected officeholders haven t had a raise since 2002, when they received double-digit bumps. Voters later passed a ballot amendment that made it harder to raise wages for those jobs. Now, both sides of the legislature must approve recommended pay changes. ....

The two chambers of the Michigan Legislature have spent more than $690,000 on confidential agreements associated with former employees in the last decade, according to information provided to the Free Press on Tuesday.
A few of these agreements are tied to employment and legal disputes. But additional details on who exactly received the payments, or why they were issued, could not be discussed because of confidentiality clauses, according to letters from legislative business offices. ....
