Daily News earns a number of Michigan newspaper awards | News, Sports, Jobs

May 1, 2021
The Daily News would like to thank the people and communities in our part of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and northeastern Wisconsin for allowing us to tell their stories through words and photographs.
After trying to chronicle a pandemic year of challenges, the Daily News has drawn a number of awards in two state newspaper contests for 2020.
In the Michigan Associated Press Media Editors Awards, The Daily News in Division 1 received third place in General Excellence. In individual categories, the newspaper earned:
First place, feature writing, Terri Castelaz;
First place, editorial writing, Betsy Bloom;
First place, headline writing;
Second and third place, feature photo, Ron Deuter for “Iron County Moose” and Betsy Bloom for “Pretty Cold.” ....

“It didn’t really sit well with me.”
That sequence of actions led MLive reporter Brad Devereaux to uncover a pattern of “subquorum” meetings held in private by the Kalamazoo City Commission for years. His reporting has led to changes in the commission’s practice, and last week, it won Devereaux the First Amendment Award from the Michigan Associated Press Media Editors.
That is the contest’s most prestigious award, because it underscores the fundamental reason why our profession is the only one enshrined in the U.S. Constitution. In a functioning democracy, the people need access to the workings of their government, and transparency from those governing them. ....

Everything we do we do for public service | News, Sports, Jobs

It costs money to print newspapers, and, like any business, we care about our bottom lines, so we can invest in our people and the technology, equipment, and services necessary to improve what we have to offer.
But, at their heart, newspapers exist for public service.
A call to public service dragged most of us into this sometimes rotten enterprise. Knowing we’ve made our communities better places in ways big and small makes all the late nights, early mornings, missed special occasions, extra five (or 10 or 20) pounds, coffee addiction, and headache worth it.
That’s why it meant so much to learn this week that the Michigan Associated Press Media Editors had given The News first place in public service for our coronavirus coverage. ....
