Katherine Lugar, president and CEO, American Beverage
MARQUETTE American Beverage, in partnership with The Recycling Partnership, has announced that communities within Marquette County will receive an investment as a part of the Every Bottle Back initiative, a beverage industry-led effort to reduce the industry’s plastic footprint and keep bottles out of nature.
Through The Recycling Partnership, America’s leading beverage companies are investing $68,800 to provide free higher-capacity recycling carts and recycling education materials to 4,450 households in Marquette County, including Marquette, Negaunee and Ishpeming townships. This investment is expected to yield over 8 million new pounds of recyclable materials over 10 years. ....

A new recycling initiative is coming to Marquette County.
The “Every Bottle Back ” initiative is an effort to reduce the industry’s plastic footprint and keep bottles out of the environment.
“Specifically, we are talking about getting 4,450 carts out in Ishpeming, Marquette Township and Negaunee Township. The goal is to be able to give people easier access to recycle things. I think as a society we want to do the right thing, we want to recycle, but it has to be convenient,” said Derek Bajema, President of the Michigan Soft Drink Association. “This is opportunity for private industry to work alongside citizens and make it easy for folks. We think this is a great opportunity for Michigan to raise its recycling rate which is needs some work. It’s at 15%, one of the lowest in the nation and the lowest among our neighboring Great Lake States.” ....

Michiganders passed up $108 million in bottle deposits amid COVID closures

State environmental officials say it’s too early to call it a windfall. That’s because some portion of the money that showed up on the state’s year-end balance sheet will likely be offset by lower-than-average revenue next year, as Michiganders liquidate stockpiles of empties that they didn’t get around to returning in 2020.
The glut of bottle bill revenue comes as a GOP-majority House budget recommendation proposes slashing the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy’s overall budget by nearly 70 percent  a move that is unlikely to gain approval from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat.
Under current law, 75 percent of revenue from unredeemed bottles which in 2019 totaled $43 million goes to the state Cleanup and Redevelopment Trust Fund, where much of it supports EGLE’s efforts to clean up and redevelop contaminated sites. The other 25 percent goes to retailers who sell bottled drinks to offset their cost of collecting returns. ....
