The state of South Dakota has opted against seeking the death penalty for a Mitchell man who was charged with first-degree murder for allegedly stabbing and killing a 56-year-old man.
Robert Ladenburger, 60, of Mitchell, was charged with first-degree murder, second-degree manslaughter and aggravated assault with intent to cause bodily harm through the use of a dangerous weapon. While he pleaded not guilty to the charges in September, Ladenburger faced the death penalty as the maximum sentence, if found guilty of the charges. The search for two suspects who led the South Dakota Highway Patrol on a high-speed pursuit that went through Mitchell on Monday is still ongoing, authorities say.
The high-speed pursuit broke out at approximately 3 p.m. on Monday, after a state Highway Patrol officer attempted to stop a red SUV for a speeding violation on Interstate 90. According to Tony Mangan, public information officer for the South Dakota Highway Patrol, authorities pursued the Toyota 4RAV vehicle into Mitchell until it approached north Main Street near the Mitchell Middle School. ....

A Mitchell man’s lawsuit against local government agencies over the ownership of a car was dismissed in federal court this week, saying there was no wrongful conduct from those agencies.
U.S. District Court Chief Judge Roberto Lange granted summary judgement to the defendants of the Davison County Treasurer’s Office and the Mitchell Department of Public Safety in a lawsuit filed by Karim Sissoko, 58, of Mitchell.
In a lawsuit filed in 2020, Sissoko had alleged that the government agencies and Billion Auto had defamed him by “publishing statements in South Dakota and beyond in order to tarnish my good name and character.” (The Billion portion of the case was dismissed in July 2020.) ....

Two individuals have been arrested for second-degree murder charges related to a Saturday night shooting in downtown Mitchell.
Authorities said Jose Morales Acevedo, 27, and Luis Perez-Melendez, 28, were arrested Sunday for second-degree murder, according to the Mitchell Department of Public Safety. A 38-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering multiple gunshot wounds. He has not yet been identified, pending family notification. ....
