City to take part in epilepsy training


The Grand Rapids City Council opened their July 26, 2021 regular meeting with an invitation for public input. 
Taking the podium was John Lavalier, resident of Grand Rapids, who wanted to voice his concerns regarding police response to people experiencing epileptic seizures. Because of a brain injury from 1996 when Lavalier was hit by a train, he frequently experiences epileptic seizures. Sometimes these seizures can be while he is shopping or at work. Lavalier claims he has had varied responses from officers who are dispatched to the emergency calls when he’s having seizures. 
One particular incident Lavalier cited happened at a grocery store in south Grand Rapids. According to Lavalier, who showed the City Council the police report, the responding officer indicated that Lavalier did not want to receive medical attention.  ....

Rukavina steps into leadership at RAMS


Ida Rukavina grew up in a family that valued education, hard work, art, and culture.
Rukavina intends to bring those same principles to her new job as Range Association of Municipalities & Schools (RAMS) executive director.
“Both of my parents taught me that all jobs have value and we should respect all work,” Rukavina said. “My grandfather on one side was a miner and my grandfather on the other side a logger. My grandmother was a cleaner at Virginia Public Utilities, my other grandmother worked in the post office, and my mother was an art teacher. I had strong people on both sides who influenced me.” ....

Solar expansion goes green in Mountain Iron


Solar panel production is going big in Mountain Iron.
Heliene, Inc. s solar panel manufacturing plant in the city s Renewable Energy Park will become the second largest solar photovoltaic module producer in the nation under a $5.5 million appropriation signed into law by Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.
“This is important for the growth (of solar power),” Martin Pochtaruk, Heliene, Inc., president said. “The demand for the product we make will continue to increase. The electrification of power generation in the United States is not going to stop.”
The $5.5 million grant will help fund a $29 million expansion of the solar plant.
Language approving the funding is part of the Minnesota Legislature Omnibus Commerce, Climate & Energy Finance & Policy bill. ....
