The Dakota County Library system and specifically Pleasant Hill Library in Hastings are returning to normal this summer after almost a year of reduced but innovative services during the COVID-19 pandemic. The libraries are open, almost all their services have returned and they have even added options that proved to be popular over the last year. Margaret Stone, the Director of the Dakota County Library system, and Julia Carlis, the Pleasant Hill Library Manager, talked about the challenges of the pandemic, what they learned and what they are taking away from the unprecedented past year. Libraries had only a matter of a few weeks to completely change how they operated as stay-at-home orders went into effect and public places closed down. Libraries in Dakota County completely shut down for about two, two-and-a-half months. Right away, they instituted curbside pickup but were able to do express services come last July.
