Electronic Call-Up System Sabotage Worsens Apapa Gridlock

Traffic has worsened in Apapa and its environs following the disruption of the electronic call-up system (ETO) introduced about two months ago by the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) with the support of the Lagos State Government to ensure free flow of vehicular movements.
THISDAY’s investigation showed that security agents, who were said to have frustrated all efforts to restore sanity to the port city, have cashed in on the situation to extort articulated vehicles’ drivers.
Even the efforts of a presidential task team failed with tales of corruption trailing its assignment.
However, following the return of sanity to the roads in Apapa last month as a result of the Electronic Call-up System, the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, had vowed to expose the cabal behind the Apapa gridlock if they did not desist from sabotaging the government’s efforts at ensuring a free flow of traffic. ....

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria on Thursday protested against non-compliance of International Oil Companies to the Stevedoring regulations issued by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency.
Stevedoring refers to the act of loading or offloading cargo to and/or from a ship.
During the protest at the APM Terminals, Apapa, Lagos, the placard-carrying workers shut disrupted operations at the terminal by shutting down the entry and exit gates.
The PUNCH gathered that the workers earlier issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, the Nigerian Ports Authority, and NIMASA starting last Friday to get the IOCs to comply with the statutory regulations. ....

TRUCK owners, under the aegis of the Association of Maritime Truck Owners AMATO, and the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, are currently on a collision course over some impounded trucks that attempted to circumvent the Electronic Call-Up system.
The leadership of AMATO has called on the NPA to urgently release all trucks impounded by the Lagos State Special Traffic and Enforcement Team.
The group said the impounded trucks had valid call-up tickets, a claim the NPA has debunked.
In a statement issued at the end of the stakeholders meeting, yesterday, held at the AMATO headquarters in Apapa, the truck owners alleged that there were irregularities and corruption in the NPA’s call-up system, noting that fake call-up tickets are currently in circulation. ....

Aggrieved members of the Association of Maritime Truck Owners, AMATO, have accused the police authority and officials of Nigeria Ports Authority, NPA, of frustrating the smooth operation of the newly introduced Electronic Call-Up system in Apapa ports.
