Pressure mounts on Okura Prestige

TOKYO 16 July 2021: Japanese business entities should stop participation in a commercial real estate project involving Myanmar’s military junta, Human Rights Now, Human Rights Watch, Japan International Volunteer Center, Justice For Myanmar, and Mekong Watch stated in a joint release on Thursday.
They are targeting Yangon’s Y-Complex, where a 399-room Okura Prestige Yangon is due to open in 2022.
Justice for Myanmar alleges that foreign investment is involved in the construction and management of the Y-Complex project that funds land lease fees to the country’s armed forces known as the ‘Tatmadaw’.

(Tokyo) – Japanese business entities should stop their participation in a commercial real estate project involving Myanmar’s abusive military, Human Rights Now, Human Rights Watch, Japan International Volunteer Center, Justice For Myanmar, and Mekong Watch said today. The proposed Y-Complex in Yangon is being constructed on land leased from the country’s armed forces, the Tatmadaw, whose long record of abuses has worsened since the February 1, 2021, military coup.

When the UN General Assembly voted on a resolution condemning the Myanmar coup, calling on the military to restore democracy, release political prisoners and end its violence, and urging UN members to “prevent the flow of arms into Myanmar”, many pundits hailed it as a significant move.

TOKYO A company headed by a former Japanese minister has been pursuing a project to develop land owned by Myanmar’s Defense Ministry through a joint venture with a military-affiliated firm, according to sources close to the matter.
With the ministry and the Southeast Asian country’s ruling military acting as one body, there are concerns such business projects may become sources of income for the junta, which has killed more than 800 people and repeatedly violated human rights since it seized power from Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s civilian government on Feb. 1. ....

At least 10 Japanese companies have direct business ties or have taken part in projects with Myanmar military-affiliated firms, according to a probe by a Kyodo News team.
Such entities include the Japan Bank for International Cooperation, construction firm Fujita Corp and property manager Tokyo Tatemono Co.
