WEIRTON After several months of delays, city officials and local African-American community members met Monday as part of a continuing effort to create a dialogue and address concerns. Pastors from a group of Weirton’s African-American churches, along with other community members, met in the Millsop Community Center with the mayor, city manager, assistant city manager, city attorney and city council. “We greatly appreciate this meeting and we hope to continue meeting in good faith,” Rickey Thompson, who had been among those organizing plans for regular meetings between the groups last year. ....

chowell@weirtondailytimes.com WEIRTON The Weirton Board of Parks and Recreation is trying to look ahead when it comes to maintaining the city’s parks for the future, and making certain their is an open dialogue with members of city council and the city administration. As part of a special council meeting Tuesday, members of the Park Board provided an update on some of the city’s recreational facilities along with what it could take to keep them viable for the future. Parks Executive Director Coty Shingle and board Chair Edwin J. Bowman expressed appreciation to council for its support over the years, with Shingle noting approximately half of their budget is from the city’s general fund. ....
