Chinese ambassador pays courtesy call on Speaker


Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Qi Zhenhong paid a courtesy call on Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena at the latter’s official residence. Secretary General of Sri Lankan Parliament Dhammika Dasanayake and Chief of Political Section of Chinese Embassy Luo Chong were present.
The Speaker warmly welcomed the new Chinese envoy on assuming his duties and spoke valued the traditional friendship between Sri Lanka and China, as well as the long-term exchanges and cooperation between the legislatures of the two countries. Ambassador Qi conveyed the cordial greetings from leaders of the National People’s Congress of China and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, and thanked the Sri Lanka Parliament for its long-term promotion of China-Sri Lanka friendship and cooperation. ....

'Right To Read' project: Bid to improve English knowledge among Southern student population – The Island


Education Minister Prof. G. L. Peiris recently discussed proposed moves to provide smart classrooms to 200 schools in Matara and Galle districts in the Southern Province under the ‘Right To Read’ project.
Prof. Peiris chaired the meeting at ‘Dakshinapaya’ Labuduwa, Galle, where the pivotal importance of providing smart classrooms meant to improve English knowledge among the student community was discussed. Among those present were Plantation Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana, State Minister Mohan de Silva, and MPs Sampath Atukorale and Isuru Dodangda, Education Secretary Prof. Kapila Perera and top businessman Azad Omar, who spearheaded the project.
Prof. Peiris, in his brief address explained how the ‘Right To Read’ project could be of decisive help to the student community and strengthen the incumbent government’s efforts to provide equal rights. Ex-TID Director says politicians framed him

Former head of the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) Nalaka de Silva, on Wednesday, told the PCoI investigating Easter Sunday attacks that he had been framed by politicians who were angered by his refusal to conduct partial investigations.
DIG Silva said that he had been appointed Director of the TID on 27 February 2015 and that he had been working under trying circumstances from the beginning.
Silva said: “TID worked on investigating terrorism, extremism as well as large serious crimes. I had a number of issues from the start. I was given certain instructions that I did not carry out because I didn’t want to conduct politically motivated investigations. There are things I will not do; I can’t do political inquiries or whitewash people.” ....

Port workers protest against move to sell ECT


Port workers yesterday held a silent protest opposite the Colombo Port, alleging that moves were afoot to sell the East Container Terminal (ECT).
Chairman of the Liberated Port Workers’ Union Prasanna Kalutharage said that the workers would jointly oppose moves to sell the ECT to an Indian company.
Kalutharage said: “All port employees are against the sale. Sri Lanka has the technology and the capability to operate the ECT.”
Members of the All Ceylon General Port Employee Union, Niroshan Gorakanage and the Progressive Trade Union on Commerce, Industry, and Services also took part in the protest.

Restrictions imposed on several areas


Colombo High Court Trial-at-Bar yesterday granted bail to former Minister Ravi Karunanayake and seven others who had been remanded over the alleged second bond scam, amounting to Rs. 36.98 billion in 2016.
President of the bench Justice Damith Thotawatte and Justice Mohamed Issardeen decided to grant bail, but Justice Manjula Tillakaratne rejected the bail application.
The accused were released on Rs. 1 million cash bail and two surety bail of Rs. 5 million each.
The High Court Trial-at-Bar imposed a travel ban on all the accused.
The court also ordered that one of the sureties should be a close relative.
The court warned that if the defendants attempted to exert influence on the witnesses, by any means, bail would be revoked and the defendants would be placed on remand until the end of the trial. ....
