Before Stonewall, Milwaukee had Black Nite; Wis. to finally honor brawl officially

Violence helped Wisconsin LGBTQ community come out of the shadows in 1961
Eight years before the famous Stonewall uprising in New York, Milwaukee was the site of a hate crime that led to the buildup of what became the Gay Rights Movement and the LGBTQ movements that followed. Governor Tony Evers (D-Wis.) has proclaimed Black Nite Remembrance Day throughout Wisconsin on the anniversary of that August 5, 1961 night.
It is the first official recognition of the historic event by any civic entity.
Partnering to make the remembrance day happen are Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, first out city councilmember Ald. JoCasta Zamarripa, the county board of supervisors, and the city council. But the commemoration was a long time coming, with the advocacy of Wisconsin LGBTQ historians and activists Michail Takach and Don Schwamb of the Wisconsin LGBTQ History Pro ....

Other contenders from Milwaukee include Alex Lasry, on leave from his executive job with the Milwaukee Bucks, state Sen. Chris Larson and Milwaukee Ald. Chantia Lewis.
State Treasurer Sarah Godlewski, who lives in Madison, and Outagamie County Executive Tom Nelson will also try to make inroads in Milwaukee.

Bucks championship parade details revealed

MILWAUKEE – The 2020-21 NBA Champion Milwaukee Bucks will celebrate their first championship in 50 years with a parade through downtown Milwaukee tomorrow, Thursday, July 22, beginning at 11 a.m.
Bucks players, coaches, owners, alumni and staff will take part in the parade, which will begin at the intersection of E. Wisconsin Ave. and N. Prospect Ave. The parade will then proceed west on E. Wisconsin Ave. before turning north onto N. Water St. From there, the route will continue on N. Water St. to E. Knapp St. before ending on E. Knapp St. at the Milwaukee River. ....
